What is a ROLLER DURBY anyways??

September 10, 2011- So... What is a ROLLER DURBY anyways??

A few days ago Lori told us that she had 3 tickets to a roller durby show and asked if Ben and I wanted to come along. Her friend Beth recently joined an intermural roller durby team and had invited her to come watch the game. None of us really had a clue what a roller durby really was, and we thought that it would be a lot of fun to go watch.

The Roller durby

I don’t know exactly how to explain it… but it was definitely an entertaining and interesting experience to watch! We couldn’t quite figure out all the rules, but basically they had one player on each team who was called the “Jammer”. These two jammers would start behind the rest of the team as they began skating around the track. The “pack” on each team was trying to keep the jammer from getting past them and scoring points. The first jammer that got through the other team's pack was called the lead jammer and was able to stop that round whenever they wanted. Once the jammer got through the pack they continued to go fast around to get through the pack again. Each time they got past the pack of the opposing team, they scored points for their team. Those are some of the basic rules, but apparently there are many more that we did not understand at all.

The Roller Durby game

Our team ended up losing AFTER it had already been announced that they had won. They called the game over and then called everyone back for one more round with 9 second left! Our team ended up falling apart on the last round and lost. All in all it was a very entertaining sport with a very diverse group of people playing and cheering them on. We had a lot of fun.

The game ended around 8:15pm so we headed out to find a restaurant for dinner. Lori brought us to this fun restaurant and we sat upstairs on the screened in porch. Below we could hear the loud karaoke bar playing, but we had the upstairs all to ourselves and it was great! Ben and I both were told that we had to try the crab cakes and the crab bisque since we were in Maryland, so that is what we ordered. I had never had crab bisque and I would say it was pretty good!
